XCEL Competition Subdivisions

Return to Rules & Policies

You might recall completing a survey regarding the number of hours each division of XCEL athletes in your gym train. As anyone who competes in the XCEL program in Missouri knows, there are many gyms that are using the XCEL program as a developmental program to lead into JO instead of compulsory and many that use it as a less demanding form of competitive gymnastics that allows the athletes more flexibility and less training hours. To help recognize these differences and allow the gyms to use the XCEL program the way they wish, we have added two subdivisions to each division of XCEL. These will be XCEL American and XCEL National and will be divided based on number of hours trained. You will declare which subdivision your XCEL athletes will be in on the team roster you submit at the beginning of the season along with the Missouri Registration Fee.

XCEL National Division will be for athletes that train up to and including the following times per week:

Bronze National - 4 hours or less per week
Silver National - 6 hours or less per week
Gold National - 9 hours or less per week
Platinum National - 11 hours or less per week
Diamond National - 12 hours or less per week

XCEL American Division will be for athletes who train more than the following times per week:

Bronze American - more than 4 hours per week
Silver American - more than 6 hours per week
Gold American - more than 9 hours per week
Platinum American - more than 11 hours per week
Diamond American - more than 12 hours per week

Some questions we have anticipated you might have:

Do you HAVE to compete in the National Division if you train those amount of hours but prefer to compete in the American Division?

No, you can choose to compete in the American Division even if you qualify for the National Division. However you cannot choose to compete in the National Division if you train in excess of the number of hours allowed per week.

Do ALL of the athletes in my gym have to compete in the same subdivision:

No, if you have athletes in your gym that are all the same division, for example XCEL Gold, but train different hours and some qualify for National and some qualify for American, they can compete in the separate subdivisions at State Meet.

Will these subdivisions be used at invitationals during the season?

No, these will ONLY be used at the State Meets.

Will athletes in the two subdivisions be judged differently or will any of the requirements be different?

No, the judges will most likely not even know which subdivision the athletes are in. Nothing will be different except the groupings for awards and when possible they will be in different sessions at the state meet.

I am CONFIDENT you will have many more questions so please feel free to ask. I believe this will be a very positive thing for our XCEL athletes and allow greater flexibility for all Missouri gyms.
